Emil Sitka ~

The Fourth Stooge

"The most important actor in most Stooges films, besides the Stooges themselves, was the sharp-nosed, wide-eyed Emil Sitka... His presence was such a mainstay of the operation that many thought of him as an undeclared 'fourth Stooge.'"

                                       -Moe Feinberg, Larry Fine's brother

Emil Sitka and The Three Stooges

Emil Sitka worked in scores of Hollywood movies with dozens of stars, but it is undoubtedly his association with The Three Stooges for which he is best remembered.
Over a period of twenty years, Emil Sitka worked with The Three Stooges in thirty-five shorts, two television pilots, four feature films, and one television series. Emil sometimes enacted two or more characters in the same film for a total of more than seventy different Stooge roles. He was a butler, a lawyer, a landlord, a justice-of-the-peace, a lunatic, and a Councilman, and that's just his first six roles! Whatever the situation required, Emil played a corresponding character to contrast with and set up the Stooges' humor.
Emil is one of only two actors who worked with all four versions of The Three Stooges. He began when it was Larry, Moe and Curly making Columbia shorts, appeared frequently during the Shemp and Besser years, and showed up in numerous De Rita-era features and TV shows.
Emil has the unusual distinction of having worked with each one of the "replacement" Stooges (Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Joe De Rita) before they joined the Three Stooges, while they were solo stars making films on their own.
Over the years, Emil got the opportunity to know each of six "men who were Stooges" in a different way.
Perhaps the most interesting role Emil played with The Three Stooges was the role that never made it to film, when he was asked by Moe Howard to actually join the trio and become a Stooge. Fate intervened and it didn't happen, but it was a very rare honor in the history of The Three Stooges.
